London/Agency Caucasus – Foreign Minister Ahmed Zakayev of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria took a step towards his resignation from his post after he was frustrated in his attempts to deter President Doku Umarov of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria from announcing himself as the Emirate of Caucasus.
Chechen internet sites reported that Mr. Zakayev submitted his resignation to the parliament. Some officials from the Foreign Ministry said that his letter of resignation was delivered to Jalauddin Saralyapov, Parliament Speaker of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria. It remains uncertain for the time being whether Saralyapov will accept Zakayev’s resignation. Saralyapov is expected to release an official statement soon. ÖZ/FT
