Nicaragua not to have diplomatic relations for now

Moscow/Agency Caucasus – Nicaragua, the only country that, after Russia, is the second to recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states, will not establish diplomatic relations with them for the moment.

It was a ‘wise and fair’ decision on both parts of Russia and Nicaragua to recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states, Samuel Santos-Lopez, Foreign Minister of Nicaragua, told his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Moscow, and added that his country would starts diplomatic contact with the two Caucasian regions at an ‘appropriate’ time soon.

With this joint action taken by both Russia and Nicaragua, one more step was taken forward in the direction of supporting fairness in foreign affairs, Lavrov said.

"Nicaragua considers asking Russia for assistance in getting closer to and entering into diplomatic dialogue with the two Caucasian republics," Santos-Lopez told reporters after he had his meeting with Lavrov.

Nicaragua’s President Daniel Ortega issued his official recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia on September 5.
