Moscow calls on Tbilisi to sign nonaggression pact

Moscow/Agency Caucasus – After flying its warplanes as an expression of challenge to Georgia, Russia called on the Georgian administration both to sign a nonaggression pact with Abkhazia and South Ossetia and to withdraw its troops from Kodor.

"The solution can only be reached," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in its written statement, "when provocations are put an end to and a treaty of nonaggression is signed at once."

The Russian Foreign Ministry also said that Georgia should contribute to the solution outlined above by promising to withdraw its troops from the Upper Kodor area of Abkhazia.

The Security Council of the United Nations (UN) called twice on the administration in Tbilisi, capital of Georgia, to demilitarize Kodor after it sent there its troops in 2006. Kodor is only 25 km away from Sukhum, capital of Abkhazia.

After four warplanes were flown over South Ossetia on Wednesday, the Russian Foreign Ministry released a statement that pressed for an urgent as well as efficient course of action to prevent bloodshed and to keep things happen peacefully. FT
