Ingushes prevented from holding public congress

Nazran/Agency Caucasus – The Ingush opposition was thwarted in its effort to voice its reaction in a public congress against the administration of the country that has been for several months teeming with members of the Federal Security Service (FSB) of the Russian Federation and the Interior Ministry units.

Public congresses are viewed as final solutions and held when the leading figures of the Caucasian society get together. The Ingushes planned to hold the 5th Emergency Public Congress on Friday as a display of their reaction against the Murat Ziyazikov administration. However, the roads to the Kantishevo village of Nazran were blocked, whereas the public congress would be held in that village. Masked soldiers and police officers with helmets  were located everywhere. The roads were blocked by using military vehicles of the URAL type and nobody was let in the village. Many delegates were unable to access the villages, leading to the cancellation of the public congress. "The administration has once more shown that it fears the public. Zyazikov and his circle of supporters do not want to allow the public evaluation of the regime," said Maksharip Beshtoyev, one of the delegates.

Security precautions were so much exaggerated that as many as four thousand soldiers and police officers were mobilized to prevent the public congress. Former attempts to hold public congresses were also prevented by the military as well as the police. ÖZ/FT
