Ingush officials admit being wrong in taking Yevloyev into custody

Nezran/Agency Caucasus – Ingush court officials admitted on Friday to having been legally wrong in taking Magomed Yevloyev into police custody after he had an argument with the former President Murat Zyazikov of Ingushetiya.

Yevloyev was shot dead on August 31 by a police officer while he was in police custody. He was a lawyer and the leader of the opposition.

The District Court of Nezran has revealed the first positive signal since Zyazikov was dismissed from office in meeting the public expectation to hear that Yevloyev had been illegally taken into police custody.

Musa Pliyev, attorney of the Yevloyev family, said that they had not expected to hear the court’s confession, though the court had done the right thing. "This confession of the court shows that the Ingush courts can now stick far more firmly to the laws, especially after Zyazikov’s dismissal from office."

"It is plain to everyone that Yevloyev’s murder had already been planned; however, while Zyazikov was in office, there were unprecedented levels of pressure imposed on courts as well as investigators. The court’s confession verifies it as being true that the administration of Ingushetiya ordered Yevloyev to be killed on purpose, and everything was put together to make it happen," Pliyev said.

Yunusbek Yevkurov, who replaced Zyazikov as the new President, promised to the family of Yevloyev that his case would be duly handled.
