Head of Society and Regional Politics program at Carnegie Center Nikolai Petrov thinks that Russia should give up on doing 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
In his statement about his report named ‘Russia 2010: less stability, more public policy’ Petrov underlined that, it’s not possible to solve problems of North Caucasia with just money and police precautions. According to Petrov, who thinks a long term policy should be applied to solve problems in North Caucasia, a painful but constructive process should be launched without expecting positive results in short term. Petrov compares methods applied to solve the problems in North Caucasia with reinforcement of vitamins for curing a dangerous disease.
Petrov stated that, Russia should give up on 2014 Sochi Olympics otherwise making up for the mistake will be far more difficult. “While talking about compensations for mistake, I mean that Olympics should take place not in Sochi, even not in Russia. It is a hard decision but as time goes by the forfeit for the mistake will be bigger. Now it is possible to overcome that problem with less loss, decision can be made and an agreement for the Olympics to take place in another region like Khantia-Mansia could be reached” said Petrov.
