Nalchik/Agency Caucasus – Nalo Zaur, a famous writer of Kabardino-Balkaria, published her new book under the title of "Adygean Names."
The book was published by the El-Fa publishing company, and was edited by Apaje Muhammed. Zaur dedicated her book to the Adygean young people who had sacrificed themselves to save the independence of Abkhazia. It has the following words from Zaur in its preface: "There is nobody in the world who would not select the best name for their kids. The search on the part of parents as well as relatives for a name begins even before the baby is born. This is perfectly normal: Isn’t it nicer to exist in this world with a nice name to call? This small book is intended to help the search for Adygean names. I feel commissioned to assist those who want to retain their sense of attachment to Adygea both spiritually and nominally. I hope this kind of people increases in number."
Zaur was critical of some Adygeans preferring either Western or Russian names. "What exactly bothers me is that a stranger dog comes in the house and kicks off the domestic one. The increase in foreign names signifies disrespect for one’s own self as well as one’s own predecessors," Zaur said.
Zaur’s book contains pronunciations of the names both in Adygean and Russian. The names are categorized into male, female and unisex. Apart from biographical notes on famous Adeygean heroes, there are funny stories about the origins of Adygean names, too. ADGPSL/ÖZ/FT
