Sukhum/Agency Caucasus – One Georgian was killed and four wounded in a gunfire that broke out in the Gal village of Saberio on November 15 between Abkhaz border guards and gunmen who infiltrated from Georgia into Abkhaz territory, the Gal police told reporters.
The dead man was identified to be Timur Ciceleva, a police officer from Zugdidi.
Long-range guns were fired from the Georgian side of River Ingur, which specifies the border between Georgia and Abkhazia. The return of Georgians to Georgia through River Ingur was followed by an attempt to infiltrate back into Gal. The Abkhaz police released the following statement about the second outbreak of the gunfire: "Five military vehicles that had soldiers in them came close to the Georgian side. After a while, a group of soldiers tried to cross River Ingur while the others backed their friends up. The gunfire left injured three Georgian police officers as well as a reporter who tried to take a photograph of them."
Chief Police Officer of Gal Lourens Kogoniya accused the Georgian side of trying to disturb the regional stability through provocations of that kind.
In response to an increase in violence in the wake of the war in August, the Abkhaz government discontinued crosses through River Ingur in October. Only members of the international organizations and those employed at the power plant, called IngurGES, are allowed to cross the border.
Four were killed and two wounded in bomb attacks in Gal on October 22-24.
