First Ossetian book’s 210th anniversary celebrated

Vladikavkaz/Agency Caucasus – The Ossetians celebrated the 210th anniversary of the first Ossetian book.

Vladikavkaz, capital of Ossetia, hosted on May 23 a conference with its focus placed on the first Ossetian book, published in 1,000 copies by the Sinodalnaya Publishing house in Moscow in May 1798. It is titled "Introductory for Starters to Read The Holy Book."

The conference was held in the National Scientific Library. The audience saw a documentary film on the publishing of books.

The National Scientific Library has in one of its special rooms this book as one of the rare works. It is a book of translation into Ossetian language. The translators are Arhimandrit Gayzo, who created the Ossetian alphabet, and Pavel Gentsaurov, a Christian preacher.

The conference provided a good opportunity to hear about how it came out from Professor Vaso Abayev, State University of North Ossetia, and Taymuraz Pliyev, a historian. "This kind of a book was really necessary for the people and it is necessary to learn details about it," said Boris Hoziyev, State University of North Ossetia.

The speakers communicated their opinions to the audience about old Ossetian scripts, public intellectuals, and the course of events that happened while press emerged in North Ossetia.

North Ossetia celebrated on May 15 its own language and literature, too. KU/ÖZ/FT
