Ljubljana – A European Union (EU) group of officials are scheduled for Monday to be in Tbilisi, capital of Georgia, in an effort to have ‘enough’ of the recent rumors about a war likely to break out between Russia and Georgia over Abkhazia, according to the EU term presidency sources.
The group has in itself the foreign ministers from Slovenia, Poland and Lithuania.
This visit was intended to ease the tension between Russia and Georgia over Abkhazia, said spokesman for the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry. However, it was not made clear if the group would continue their visit to Abkhazia.
Neither Slovenia nor the EU did not intend to show support for one side and ignore another one, said Dimitrij Rupel, Foreign Minister of Slovenia, because that would be entirely wrong: "We only want to show the situation as it really is and to prevent the tension from rising." Although Rupel was inclined to dismiss the likelihood of Georgia fighting a war against Russia, he was careful to say that it was necessary to eliminate this likelihood.
The day before Tbilisi hosted the EU troika. Peter Semneby, EU special representative for the South Caucasus, said that the EU kept a close watch over the goings-on in Abkhazia. (Agency Caucasus)
