Brussels/Agency Caucasus – After Russia has lifted the embargo on Abkhazia early in March in retaliation for the recognition of Kosovo’s independence, the European Union (EU) now fears that Abkhazia might be recognized by the Russian administration.
Worried that Russia might recognize Abkhazia, the EU now seeks ways to strengthen the position of Georgia, said Benita Ferrero-Waldner, a member of the European Commission, the executive organ of the EU. Ferrero-Waldner is in charge of the foreign affairs of the European Comission.
The issue would be brought up for discussion next time the EU foreign ministers met in Brussels, said Ferrero-Waldner: "The EU has always clearly supported the territorial integrity of Georgia. This issue is quite clear for us. We’ll discuss how we can support Georgia in this difficult situation."
Sweden and Poland have also called upon the EU to work towards stabilizing the general situation in Georgia prior to the general elections in May. (Agency Caucasus)
