Maikop/Agency Caucasus – Former Mayor Mikheil Chernichenko of Maikop, capital of Adygeia, was re-elected the mayor of Maikop.
Aside from Chernichenko, Lazar Afanasyev and Igor Didenkov also run in the elections, held in parallel to the March 2 Presidential elections of Russia. Chernichenko was nominated by the ruling Party of United Russian. He won 65.6 percent, Didenko 11.23 percent and Afanasyev 19.61 percent of the votes. The Adgygei Communists did not nominate anyone as Mayor of Maikop. Chernichenko Hazrat Shovmen was the mayor of Maikop from 1992 to 2002. Although he emerged victorious in the 2002 presidential elections, he had to leave under pressure from the administration his authority to Nikolai Pivovarov. KU/ÖZ/FT
