Chechen set to become medium of instruction next year

Caharkala/Agency Caucasus – Russia’s puppet Chechen administration takes a significant step forward in the direction of rendering the Chechen language as the medium of instruction in early stages of education as of next year.

The bill was submitted for discussion at the Committee of Science, Education and Culture of the Chechen Parliament. Anzor Muzayev, the Minister of Education of Chechnya, joined the members of the Committee in their discussions.

Muzayev said that the adaptation to the new system would be gradual: "Education in the Chechen language in early stages of education will start gradually. The new system will be applied to only 20 schools in the 2008-2009 school year," said Muzayev. The Chechen language could not be rendered at this stage the medium of instruction in all departments of education for some technical reasons, said Muzayev. However, he added, the Ministry of Education would remain determined in its efforts to make it happen sooner or later. "We need time to achieve better results. Due to lack of resources in teaching, it is not yet possible to have the Chechen language as the medium of instruction in all schools," Muzayev said.

Ramzan Kadyrov, the Kremlin-guided President of Chechya, addressed the need to use the Chechen language as the medium of instruction in his 9 July 2007 public statement and suggested that the parliament should adopted the bill soon. KU/ÖZ/FT
