Sukhum/Agency Caucasus – Abkhazian President Sergei Bagapsh called on the international community, which recognized Kosovo’s independence in February, to give up double standards.
Bagapsh spoke to reporters after the Parliament of Abkhazia made a decision on Friday to officially apply to the United Nations (UN), the European Union (EU) and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) for its recognition as an independent and sovereign country. "We call upon the international community to leave aside double standards and recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent," Bagapsh said. In denial of the argument that Kosovo would not set an example for other countries, Bagapsh said that Abkhazia would take the recognition of Kosovo as an example and he defied the validity of claims that Kosovo was an exception.
