Abkhazia willing to go under Russia’s protection

Moscow – Abkhazia announced plans to take a probable move towards signing an agreement of military patronage with Russia after Georgia was reported to send off military instruments as well as military stuff to Kodor Valley.

Because Georgia made preparations to launch a war, Abkhazia’s President Sergei Shamba told RIA Novosti, "we can sign a treaty of military cooperation with Russia to get protected from a possible Georgian incursion into the Abkhazian territory. We can show respect for Russia’s regional interests in return for the supply of military protection and economic cooperation," said Shamba. "We can see that Russia maintains its military interests in Abkhazia, because it is a region of strategical importance to Russia. And it has always been so. That’s why the little Abkhazia gets mentioned in all talks between leaders of recognized countries."

Shamba also told the Radio of Moscow that his country would willingly do anything to meet the needs of Russia in constructing military bases in Abkhazia.

Shamba’s statements came after the Russian Ministry of Defense announced its decision to send off additional troops to Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The Russian Ministry of Defense made it plain in its statement that Russia would definitely respond to an attack on the Russian citizens or the Russian peacekeeping forces in Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

The Russian Ministry of Defense’s special envoy in the Commonwealth of Independent States Valeri Kenyakin said that Russia would take every possible action whatsoever to respond to a possible military operation launched from Georgia. And the administration in Tbilisi then took this statement as a threat of attack. (Agency Caucasus)
