Sukhum/Agency Caucasus – The administration of Abkhazia announced on Thursday that two Georgian military vessels came under Abkhazian fire to take the way back to Georgia after they were detected as trespassing the Abkhazian waters.
The administration of Georgia was, however, not in agreement with its counterpart in Abkhazia.
An official statement from Kristian Bjaniya, the presidential secretary of the press, said that the Abkhazian Ministry of Defense received news of the two Georgian military vessels trespassing the Abkhazian waters. The Abkhazian Coast Guard officers were afterward ordered to open fire to the two Georgian military vessels when they came as close as four miles to Gagida, part of the Gal province. The Georgian vessels then left the Abkhazia waters.
Similar cases have happened before, said Bjaniya, and added that the Abkhazian administration would definitely act seriously to prevent similar occurrences.
Lela Mchedlidze, spokesperson for the Georgian Coast Guard, refuted the statements of Abkhazia: "It is not true that the Georgian vessels were ever off the coast of Abkhazia, which is not recognized internationally." KU/ÖZ/FT
