Nalchik/Agency Caucasus – Arsen Kanokov, President of Kabardino-Balkaria, a country stricken with incidents of rebellion by the suppressed Muslim youth in one of its cities, Nalchik, called the writers of his country to fight religious fundamentalism and nationalism.
Kanokov met on Wednesday in Nalchik with members of the Writers’ Association of Kabardino-Balkaria. He said admittedly that his administration has not been able to wipe the religious fundamentalism out of his country yet, because young people in large numbers continued to join the religious groups. “Under these circumstances, you, the writers, should be able to reach out to those young people and use your power as the writers in joining our efforts,” Kanokov said.
Kanokov was also careful to ask the writers not to allow the kind of a nationalist movement to emerge and destroy the ethnic harmony that exists in the country. “The administration does its best in not allowing the kind of things to happen and damage the existing international harmony in the country. In this regard, the writers should align themselves with the administration and give the priority to maintaining international education, friendship and the fraternity of the people,” said Kanokov.
Himself included, every member of the administration would assume a responsibility to carry out in the field of culture and arts, said Kanokov. “I believe that this will help both to solve more easily the problems that face the organizations of culture and arts and to defend their interests at governmental level. I am personally prepared to cooperate with the Writers’ Association.” CT/ÖZ/FT
