Sukhum/Agency Caucasus – As part of its ongoing humanitarian projects to help Abkhazia, the Danish Refugee Council, or DRC, has announced that it will supply €2.5 million in financial aid to Abkhazia in 2009.
The DRC is a private Danish humanitarian organization, founded in 1956. It has been active in humanitarian projects in Abkhazia since 1999.
Members of the DRC met with Abkhaz President Sergei Shamba in Sukhum, capital of Abkhazia. President Shamba was given a copy of the programme for 2009.
The DRC members promised that they would supply small entrepreneurs with small amounts of loans, support works of rehabilitation for local communities as well as of private housing.
In addition to its humanitarian work in Sukhum, the DRC would also have humanitarian projects in eastern regions such as Gal, Tkuarchal and Ochamchira.
The president expressed gratefulness to members of the DRC and noted that there would be a constant need for the DRC to remain active in its humanitarian projects in Abkhazia even if the country underwent social and economic changes.
