Abkhaz parliamentarians visit Chechnya

Dzokhar-Ghala/Agency Caucasus – Abkhazia increases its administrative relations with Russia’s puppet government in Chechnya.

A group of Abkhaz parliamentarians went to Chechnya with a view towards increasing the administrative as well as parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.

The Abkhaz group of parliamentarians had in it Speaker Nugzar Ashuba of the Parliament; Zaur Adleyba, who chairs the Parliamentary Committee of Foreign Affairs; Garik Samanba, who chairs the Parliamentary Committee of Defense and National Security; Mikhail Sanguliya, who is a member of this committee; Vladimir Nachach, who chairs the Committee of Legislation and Ruslan Tuntayev, who chairs the Center of Vaynakh.

In February, a group of Chechen parliamentarians led by Speaker of the Parliament Dukvakh Abdurrahmanov went to Sukhum and had talks with the Abkhaz officials about a draft cooperation agreement in the fields of economics, politics, culture, sports and science.

Ashuba said that the Chechens and the Abkhazians shared a similar destiny: "We take a serious attitude towards shared issues and problems; we negotiate the future plans and we benefit greatly from each other’s experience. We are strongly willing to take part in shared activities, for which all the preconditions are available. We will be happy to deal with what is not easy, hoping that it will add to the mutual understanding between the two nations."

In 1992 and 1993, 445 Chechens voluntarily opted to fight shoulder to shoulder with the Abkhazians against Georgia, with 75 of them being killed and 147 injured. The Abkhaz government awarded 43 Chechens with a token of courage for their brave actions in the war against Georgia.
