Makhackala/Agency Caucasus – Seven people in the Gimri village of Untsukul province, part of Dagestan that has been under one month of siege for reasons relating to a governmental fight against resisters, were reported under house arrest.
News of the seven people placed under house arrest came from Adilgrey Magomedtagirov, Interior Minister of Dagestan. He said that the security forces had received assistance from imams and members of the council of elders, both, in getting the seven people first to give up voluntarily their armed resistance and then to accept to be placed under house arrest. "These seven people still remain subjected to police investigation," said the interior minister.
Ali Magomedov, a senior official at the Dagestan office of the FSB, or the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation, also said that the government would definitely crack down on such people as the seven people, who were now under house arrest. "We hope that the others, too, will voluntarily give up fighting," said Magomedov.
The underground resistance movement of Gimri was well armed, said Magomedov. The police found a machine used for coining money, a hideout and a secret network that provided underground access to some houses in the house of Ibrahim Gacidadayev, believed to the leader of local resisters. Entries into and exits from Gimri are still under police control. The city remains under siege by means of tanks and other types of armed vehicles. KU/ÖZ/FT
