ID checks scare Ingushes in Nalchik

Nalchik/Agency Caucasus – The security forces of Kabardino-Balkaria have been doing kinds of things that seem to be meant to frighten the Ingush people in the wake of the assassination of Anatoli Kyarov, head of a department of the Interior Ministry that was set up to battle organized crimes.

The security forces asked on January 19 all residents of Nalchik, capital city of Kabardino-Balkaria, in districts of Strelka, Zatishie and Shanhai as well as university students to identify themselves. The OMON forces cordoned all streets off to traffic, as well. Drivers were asked to submit their identity details to the police. Although the security forces were utterly kind to the civilians, it became unavoidable to ask whether this was the beginning of a large-scale operation on the Ingush people.

Nobody was arrested during the ID checks.

Vladimir Pekov, someone who is living in Nalchik, told Agency Caucasus his own story: "I was out on the Kalujnii Street. I was asked to submit my papers to the police. And I did what I was told. I was later asked to answer why I was here, because it was apparent from my papers to them that I was living somewhere else. I said I had something to do here and then I was set free."

Ahmad Ahmatov, another person who is living in Nalchik, said that he was set free after he was asked to submit his papers to the police while he was set out to his job in the morning. KU/ÖZ/FT
